Getting your stuff out west - best way?

So, I'm feeling majorly overwhelmed. I've wanted to move out to SF for YEARS and i'm so close I can taste it. But now I'm confused as hell as to how to do this. I don't have anyplace to ship my stuff before I leave, and I don't want to bother my friends to ship my stuff once I get there. Do I have any other options?

Initially I thought of buying a car here and driving cross country but I've been told that might be unwise because paperwork once there would be a huge hassle. I'm so confused!! I'm a native New York who's always lived in the same place but I feel a change is necessary.

Any tips?

Thanks!

Hey all! Just looking around here, was amazed to find this group called "new yorkers who left for san francisco" since I am about to become one... :) Grew up in NYC, planning on finally leaving in October! Counting the days... :) Any general advice? Are apartment rents really as scary as they say (compared to NYC, that is?) How's the job market etc? Just looking to see if anyone who has lived in both places can make some comparisons...!

so the thing i'm curious about is - when someone asks you where you're from, what do you say?

personally, i identify as a San Franciscan, though i was born in brooklyn and raised in the 'burbs. but in my first year here, i probably would've answered differently.

so, speak up! say how long you've been in SF, and whether you call your self a New Yorker, a San Franciscan, or a New Yawkah

stay in nyc, sf has got nothin' on it!

okay, i'm biased, i was born and raised in san jose, visited sf regularly as a teen, then lived there for 2 years. i was never happier than when i left that place.

sure, its gorgeous, unique, surreal, at times really weird in a way that I'll never figure out lol, great restaurants, a half-way decent nightlife, but...

holy shit is the weather depressing. fog, cold wind, at any time of year it can hit you. you can't leave the house without a jacket.

and the people? give me a break, do i need to even explain? PC, cold, fake.
there are plenty of awesome, friendly people in sf, but im painting a picture of what this city does to some people, not all.

i had a dream apartment, wonderful roommates, unbelievable location for dirtcheap rent, (haight by golden gate if you must know, heh heh) good friends, and yet, i was slowly getting more and more depressed. mainly, i think the weather and energy, which is difficult to explain, but it makes people seem to be a bit slow and confused and like, uhh, maybe its a california thing too, lol.

i fell in love with nyc. love the people, most everything about it that ain't evil (big business, the wealthy, designer clothing stores on fifth ave, rent prices)

so yeah, stay! on the other hand, you should move there, just to see how much you miss nyc.

okay, this was my rant, hope you enjoyed it, and please, don't take it too seriously XD

Hi Friends, I am sorry I have been out of touch--I have been completely pulled into SF Life.

So, let's do a get together. I have some ideas about where.

We could do a picnic in Golden Gate Park?

What do you say?

Gary Goldberg (creator of Family Ties & Spin City) in SF on 3/4

Gary Goldberg (creator of Family Ties & Spin City) in SF on March 4
@JCCSF, 3200 California Street (at Presidio), SF

A sports-crazed kid from Bensonhurst Brooklyn, Gary David Goldberg never imagined he'd end up in Hollywood let alone make it big there. But when he met the love of his life, he followed her out to Northern California, moved in and never moved out. He also, without realizing it, put himself on track to found UBU Productions (named after his beloved Labrador) and become a successful creator of family sitcoms including Family Ties, Brooklyn Bridge, and Spin City.

With close friends including Michael J. Fox (Goldberg's second choice for the role of Alex P. Keaton) and Steven Spielberg (who thankfully didn't listen when Goldberg tried to talk him out of doing E.T.), Goldberg gives us a rare behind-the scenes look at the entertainment industry.

I just joined this tribe. What a great way to connect with you all. Do you speak in question? Do I?

Born in Flatbush, lived in Huntington (LI). Went to college at SUNY Stony Brook.
I even lived in Southern CA for 5 years. Been in the bay 13 years.

Boy, I really learned what a NY-er was by leaving the east coast.

Thanks for the Carvel tip in Berkeley. Now for a tip back about good food.

Connie's Cantina in Oakland by the Grand Lakes Theatre. Great Mexican food.
Connie runs the place. She's from Columbia.

You have to taste the Al Pastor (Shredded BBQ pork). It's to die for.
Her secret ingredient is coke syrup. Also, try the chicken tortilla soup.
Even her refried beans have a hint of lime that make it special.

so i was in NYC

i guess it's been a couple months, end of Jan. for the worst reasons, family emergency.

but i did get to see everything again. - a little unsettling, down by ground zero the biggest, dumbest looking of the six cops just standing around holding his M16.
i hadn't realized my dad had worked about one block from ground zero, ill have to post the pic from the window there, got a few ok shots for the gallery of the city, mostly for the purpose of showing some friends here what the rows of skyskrapers look like.

mainly- HOLY COLD- i dont know how i used to live through that every winter. i'm from LI, so staying in the suburbs, completely dead at night,
and really since it was during that super cold before the snow they had, it was pretty bleak all over.

EGG ROLLS !! oh so many good egg rolls, and of course slice after slice. BUT - a couple pizza places kinda switched to a new way of doing things, more like sbarro type restaurant. thumbs down.
at least my favorite spot was the same. sooo good

EASY PASS- ok that thing is not half as good as fastrak. they still have stupid gates at every booth, they dont have cameras, and the pass doesnt always work. when it doesnt work, you have to hold everyone up and wait for an attendant to run you thru.
if you leave your pass at home by accident or something, you have to pay. if something doenst work right, the gate keeps you blocked.
with Fastrak, they have the license plate camera so even if you dont have your pass, it still works, and you never have to block traffic

overall, things seemed about the same. too many more houses and highways in LI, but the city was still awesome (as if it could be anything else)

x-country drive tales (US)?

I've been posting this in a few tribes, so my advance apologies if you've seen it, but...

I'm looking for info. from people on memorable stops while driving across country, say NYC to SF or vice versa. Not looking for the month-long take a detour kind of drive, but what memorable stops you might have had along the way while trying to get from point A to B reasonably quick. This is for something I'm writing, so even horror stories or tales of divy truck-stop towns are welcome. Did you take route 80, route 50? What did you see, what kind of places did you stay in? Feel free to post here or message me personally -- thanks

voting

I've finally exercised my rights to vote. My experience in the voting arena was very different from what I'm use to back East.

So here are a few things that I felt weird about:
1. Voting in a church
2. Voting in somebody's house -- What DA?!
3. Why did we have all these propositions to read about? What are the representatives for? Aren't they suppose to deal with these issues?? I'm not a genius in legal jargon and I should have confidence in my representative to make these decisions so I don't have too.
4. Who the heck is Starchild? Exotic dancer? Is that a joke?
5. Voting booths -- I remembered having some curtains coming around me and literally pulling on levers to choose a candidate. Is this what you call modern technology.
6. They didn't even look at my ID to see who I was too.

Does anyone have any thoughts about their voting this evening? Or can give me some insight to some of the things I've seen?

Thanks!

Hey eveyrone, I am back in nyc--but now really bi coastal--I have a love in San Francisco. Thanks to Jet blue we can take the L train at 85 dollars each way. I really miss Sf but there is something magical about both places. Its really a hard decision. San Francisco to me is where my spirit resides, my brain, thirsts for nyc. Has anyone ever debated the two?

Query: Is it ok that I'm not originally from NYC, but the dreaded LI.

Also: It seems that everyone on list, has only moved here recently. My question is: I've been here a really long time, so much that I now consider myself a native. <lol>
Is it ok for an old-timer to hang out here with you newbies??

Casting Call: Get drunk (for free!) and famous (well, maybe)!

Do you live in the San Francisco Bay Area? Want to get drunk for free and talk to us about your life while being filmed? Do you consider yourself interesting/funny/crazy? Are you unabashed about seeing yourself get more than a little loose on the big screen?

Two local, independent producers are looking for approximately 20 interesting folks in the Bay Area for our humorous documentary chronicling the effects of alcohol on personality.

Here's how it works:

You come to us and sit down in a chair. We provide you with your poison of choice and for up to 2.5 hours we record your progress from sober to as drunk as you would like to get. We'll buy you enough of the wine, spirits or beer you need to accomplish this (below the threshold of human toxicity, of course!). Expensive wine drinkers please take note: our spending limit is $50 per person.

The shoot will be indoors, at a home business location in San Francisco. For your own comfort, you may bring a friend to the shoot. During the course of the shoot, we will ask you questions about yourself. These questions range from the mundane and ordinary to the type you might see in a colorful online personality test. You of course have the discretion to answer only the questions you see fit. You may also appear in the movie under a pseudonym. This will be a conversation, geared toward the study of how behavior changes with alcohol.

At the end of the shoot, if you do not already have a ride, we will either put you in a cab with cab fare, or a member of the crew will drive you home. (Note: if you live far outside the borders of San Francisco but don't have transportation, let us know and we will handle on a case-by-case basis. We are willing to do a little extra for great interviewees!)

We are looking to get this movie into the 2005 festival circuit, or even possibly onto MTV or HBO.

Our next "Meet-and-Greet," where you will meet the producers, Justine and Sean, fill out a simple form telling us a bit more about yourself, and participate in short interviews, will be held Thursday, October 14th at Sadie's Flying Elephant (Potrero & Mariposa, SF). We wish to be certain we are gathering a diverse group of fun and fascinating people, and we want you to see that we are not a bunch of insane pornographers.

The shoots will take place during 6pm and 9pm time slots during the month of November. Appearance dates will be scheduled during October with the individuals chosen from the Meet-and-Greets.

To participate, you must:

- be over 21, with valid photo I.D.

- sign an appearance release form

If this sounds like fun, send us an email and tell us a little bit about yourself and why you want to be in this film. (Or just show up at Sadie's on Oct. 14th)

We look forward to hearing from you!!
Meet The Mets !

Ya gotta love it when the Mets pull something like this off.

METS 9, YANKEES 3

"It's All Mets in Subway Series Opener"
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/26/sports/baseball/27Mets-CND.html?ex=1403668800&en=be1e26e13a178617&ei=5007&partner=USERLAND

NEW YORK (AP) -- With the bases loaded in the first inning, and the Yankee Stadium crowd already sensing another win over their crosstown rival, Al Leiter quieted the fans and the Bronx Bombers' bats.

"Keep not believing in us," said Cliff Floyd, who homered in the seventh for the Mets' final run.

"They beat us up," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "There's not much to talk about. We couldn't get them out."

Playing against a team Leiter (3-2) called "the mighty Yankees," who have the best record in the majors at 45-26, the Mets finished with 12 hits and stopped a seven-game losing streak against their crosstown rival, pulling back to .500 this season at 36-36.

...is probably the top thing on my "miss list".

In NYC I never could conceive of having a frozen pizza in my house...now I find myself buying them from time to time.

Don't gimme no freakin' Zachary's talk either---it's tasty food, but it 'taint pizza.

Arizmendi & Cheeseboard are yummy, but they lack that NYC pizza thing.

Heard that Arinell's is good, tried it once but...

LET'S START A FUND TO IMPORT A COUPLA GUYS (preferably a "Vinnie") FROM BROOKLYN AND START A DECENT PIZZA SHOP!!!

From a week and a half in New York. I must have had pizza for a good five of my first six meals of the trip. Got reaquainted with the effect of truly flavorfull tomato sauce on a pizza. Mmmmm...

Spent some quality time with old friends, visited with the family, caught a Yankee game with my bro (we won this time!), bar crawled on Bleeker street till four in the morning like the good old days. The old town definately remains in a post 9-11, post Guiliani hangover, but it was good to be back, even if I did spend the latter half of the trip with my arm in a sling.

As a matter of introduction while similtaneuosly sparking some activity, a couple questions to my fellow ex-New Yawkas

1. Who are you?

2. How long have you been here?

3. When, if ever, would you consider returning (to stay).

4. Bagels - is anything they serve out here even worthy of the name?

My answers:
1. Howard, 31, observer and recorder of the world and general cynic.

2. 5 1/2 years

3. Probably someday, but I'm pretty much settled and enjoying myself here.

4. No, not possible, though I must say at this point California is so ingrained in me that I am typically ordering things like hummus, sundried tomatoes and vegitables on my bagels (the horror, the horror)

__________________________________________________________________________
On Saturday January 24, Chris Hackett, Founder of the Madagascar Institute in Brooklyn, New York,

sustained massive physical injuries when an explosive art-piece he was developing detonated in his

face. The explosion left him with broken bones in his face, a broken jaw, and burns throughout his

body. Like many working artists, Hackett has no medical insurance and no money to pay for the

reconstructive surgery he will need for his face. In response to the explosion, the NYPD sent their

anti-terrorism unit to The Institute and confiscated all of the Institute's computers, maps of various

spots in New York City, and other personal and professional materials.

The Madagascar Institute is a seminal arts organization in New York City. The Institute's artists have

spearheaded street performances and events both in New York and around the world. Including:

Glastonbury Festival in England, Robodoc in Rotterdam, and have been a regular presence at the Burning

Man festival. In addition to staging performances and creating art, The Madagascar Institute holds both

free and inexpensive classes on everything from sewing, to welding and auto-repair. People from all

over New York's many diverse communities are drawn to The Madagascar Institute. The Institute has

helped shape these individuals into skilled artists, welders, and machinists and many of these artisans

have in turn moved on to create their own projects and art throughout the country.

The purpose of the benefit at SomArts is two-fold. Firstly, to raise much needed monies to cover Chris

Hackett's exorbitant medical expenses and to keep The Institute afloat while he recuperates. Secondly,

to rouse dialogue in the creative community as a whole, to discuss legal, privacy, and other First

Amendment issues pressingly relevant to artists in the post-September Eleventh anti-terror

sociopolitical climate.
