Getting your stuff out west - best way?

So, I'm feeling majorly overwhelmed. I've wanted to move out to SF for YEARS and i'm so close I can taste it. But now I'm confused as hell as to how to do this. I don't have anyplace to ship my stuff before I leave, and I don't want to bother my friends to ship my stuff once I get there. Do I have any other options?

Initially I thought of buying a car here and driving cross country but I've been told that might be unwise because paperwork once there would be a huge hassle. I'm so confused!! I'm a native New York who's always lived in the same place but I feel a change is necessary.

Any tips?

Thanks!

    • CAR = no big deal

      CAR PAPERWORK HASSLE=

ZERO- they are so wrong... years ago there was something called an "environmental impact fee" for bringing in out of state, non cal emissions vehicles- wrell, that was struck down and the fees were refunded years and years ago (like in about 98)= it was a $3000 fee for bringing in cars not up to cal smog standards, but it was deemed unconstitutional, unfair.

BRINGING IN A CAR= go to dmv with your reg, re reg it. takes about an hour or two. NO BIG DEAL.... you have 30 days after arriving in state, and honestly you really jsut need to re reg it when its up, you prolly wont get hassled.

BETTER STILL= the car will say under the hood on the emissions sticker it is a federal compliant vehicle which means it only has to pass fed smog, not California's more stringent test, and YES all smog shops can do this. Basically all it means is the acceptable numbers are higher on an out of state car than a cali car, and this is ok.

I have done this myself, it is really no big deal. THE ONE HITCH= you CAN NOT bring a NEW car from out of state to here to be regged, new cars must be bought here, but bringing your old already regged in another state car here to be re regged in Cal is NO BIG DEAL AT ALL.

oin case you wonder, i know all this becasue i have done it, a friend brought a car down from WA and i bought it from him, regged it here. no problem at all, got it smogged and everything, the smog guy just looked under the hood, saw the sticker, made sure it passed fed standards, and i was on the road
