I've been posting this in a few tribes, so my advance apologies if you've seen it, but...

I'm looking for info. from people on memorable stops while driving across country, say NYC to SF or vice versa. Not looking for the month-long take a detour kind of drive, but what memorable stops you might have had along the way while trying to get from point A to B reasonably quick. This is for something I'm writing, so even horror stories or tales of divy truck-stop towns are welcome. Did you take route 80, route 50? What did you see, what kind of places did you stay in? Feel free to post here or message me personally -- thanks

I drove from NYC to SF in July of 1990 and made the trip in 4 days (long driving days). I was doing the drive with my then-boyfriend on Route 80 and when it got to be 7:00 ish each evening, we'd have to start thinking about finding a town in which to stop for the night. It got a little dicey one night in Wymong because we passed up a few towns in order to push on a little farther and then, at about 10:00 p.m. we found ourselves exhausted and in the middle of nowhere. So, out in the dessert (which is pretty eerie at night in and of itself) we came upon this creepy little truck stop town. I don't know if it was even a town or just a few buildings off the highway because it was so dark and we were so tired, but it had this one strange rundown motel which we checked into for the night and the place was out of another era cmpletely. I can't remember the town, but will never forget the motel: it was called the Western Roundup Motel, it had sparkly ceiling stucco and, get this, a velvet painting of a cowboy on the wall over our bed. It cost us a whopping $27 for the night (I think I still have the recipt somewhere). It's a good thing I was dog-tired that night because, otherwise, I don't think I would have slept a wink in that place.

when i was even more broke than i am currently, i used to go back and forth more often.
SIX times (3 round trip) on a freaking greyhound. talk about 3 (TWICE 4 because of snow) days of hell.

there was also the time i hitch hiked to florida first then drove up.
oh boy. 12 days. ridiculous long, most people get there faster.

wouldnt even know where to begin.

the wet Mexicans at the rio grande.... stowing away on greyhound for 300 miles on an 80 mile ticket...

"sticky buns" offering his toothless mouth and tight ass over the cb from a truckstop

i could go on forever about the people i met while trying to get back and forth. 3 people who kinda stand out were the truck driver, the farmer, and the soldier. all 3 defined themselves by their work, and were so proud of it. hard to explain. they all so looked the part.
if there were ever people to fit stereotypes, these were them, and to hear their version of America, that's it.
